ENEMIES IN THE GATE

Synopsis

ENEMIES IN THE GATE is a frightening novel written at a fearsome time in American history. When U.S. Border Patrol Agent Kylie White’s nine-year-old son Tommy falls ill, she is soon up against the most terrifying antagonist of all—the one no one can see. Quickly, Kylie’s roles as mother and agent collide, and she is forced to do more than stop homegrown terrorism—she must consider from where it stems and why.

Late summer in northern Maine is usually a reprieve from the harsh winter months. Yet this June, Kylie’s son has fallen ill with a mysterious respiratory ailment and dime-sized facial blisters. This is clearly a virus the likes of which tiny Aroostook County, Maine, has never seen. Kylie and Patrol Agent in Charge Mike Hewitt soon learn why—the chimeric virus is manmade, part of a bioterrorism plot that threatens to dwarf 9/11 and the very building that symbolizes the United States’ militaristic power and the nation’s fight against global terrorism into a mockery.

Federal agencies—the CDC and the FBI—are soon called in. But federal involvement gives Kylie little comfort. Seasoned and highly skilled, she was recently appointed to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) team, a specialized unit of volunteer agents selected from a nationwide pool. But when Tommy’s condition worsens to include symptoms associated with Foot and Mouth Disease and anthrax poisoning, she goes after the one person who can save her son—the virus’ creator, the man with its antidote.

The breakneck pursuit leads to a terrorist plot aimed at infecting the Pentagon and its 24,000 employees. In the end, Kylie is left face-to-face with the antagonist; with her own new-found realizations about domestic terrorism; with her conflicting parental responsibilities and professional duties; and with the possibilities of a new relationship.
